Sanctions
The fines for driving with tyres that do not meet the tread depth requirements or without properly mar- ked winter tyres in the period in which winter tyres are compulsory are as follows:
- NOK 1000 per tyre for motor vehicles with a permitted gross weight of up to 7500 kg.
- NOK 2000 per tyre for motor vehicles with a permitted gross weight in excess of 7500 kg. The fine for not having chains is:
- NOK 750 for motor vehicles with a permitted gross weight of up to 7500 kg.
- NOK 1200 for motor vehicles with a permitted gross weight in excess of 7500 kg.
- NOK 1500 for motor vehicles with a permitted gross weight in excess of 7500 kg towing a trailer with a permitted gross weight of more than 3500 kg.
One fine is imposed per missing chain.
In serious cases, failure to ensure adequate traction may result in prosecution, instead of a fine. In the event of insufficient traction, you may be prohibited from driving, irrespective of any fine or prosecution.
Chain stations
Chain stations are available before and after diffi- cult road sections. These stations are signposted. These chain stations are cleared of snow and are big enough to allow tractor-trailer combinations to park while drivers attach or remove chains. Chain stations can usually be found on flat road sections so that you can stop and re-tension your chains after having driven some distance.
When you arrive at a chain station, it is a good idea to call the information line (tel. 175) to check conditi- ons on your route.
!
Remember that correctly marked tyres and minimum tread depth are no guarantee for adequate traction
